P-IBM 19
The lines marked * are those actually used by the packet modem.
Consult the appendices of your computer manual for more detailed
RS232C information.
NOTE: We cannot over emphasize the importance of verifying that cables
and adapters are wired correctly with no shorts, open lines or wire
reversals. This applies to the off-the-shelf items for which you paid good
money as well as when making your own cables.
"PMP" PARALLEL PRINTER PORT ADAPTION:
I
t is possible to design a packet terminal program that makes use of the
parallel printer port of IBM-compatible computers. "PMP" (Poor Man's
Packet) is the example immediately familiar to us. The following information
pertains only to preparing the P-IBM modem to work in such a
configuration. Please consult "PMP" documentation for ALL other details.
In this application, a connection from the computer serial port to the modem
is still used, but only as a DC voltage source. In addition, however, you
need to build a special cable to connect the computer's parallel printer port
to the 5 points of the modem circuit clearly designated on the PC board
drawing (P2,P3,P11,P15 and P18).
[ ] Remove or don't install jumpers JMP1 and JMP2.
[ ] The cable goes together "by the numbers":
DB25 Printer Port P-IBM Modem PC-Board
2 P2
3 P3
11 P11
15 P15
18 P18
Use a male (ie: with pins) DB25 connector if you wish to plug it directly into
your computer's printer port. If you want to run your cable to a switch box or
the printer end of a parallel cable, choose your connector(s) carefully and
identify all pin numbers correctly.
