A Few Thoughts for Packet Newcomers (and other folks in a big

hurry to get on the air!)

Even though I've written this book, use computers daily in my work, have

done a lot of reading about packet radio, and have an Extra class license, I

never before operated packet data radio...and I want to assure you from

direct personal experience that there's a good reason for all suggestions

that sound "preachy" in this documentation.

I wrote most of those common-sense directions BEFORE I decided that I

owed it to you kit-builders and to Ramsey Electronics to take the time to

actually try out "the system"! It does not embarrass me at all to tell you

exactly how it went, because my experiences prove our basic point quite

plainly.

My first conclusion is that you can expect to spend a LOT of time if you try

to get going completely by yourself. I did so intentionally, because it is my

job to make sure you can count on what we publish in this and other

instruction manuals, and I do my best writing from figuring things out for

myself.

My first big chunk of weekend was really wasted until I finally discovered

that my serial cable between the modem and PC was actually the null

modem serial cable I use for dumping files from the laptop to the PC. (A null

modem simply reverses the serial transmit and receive data lines!) That

was just the very beginning of the frustration.
